Setting the Bar Higher This Year
I’m not a big “New Year’s resolutions” person, but when 2022 began I was inspired to make some major changes in my life. I realized it was time to stop caring so little about what I was eating, drinking, wearing, buying, etc., and start caring more about where those things were coming from, how they were made, and how they impact the planet.
It’s going to be a long journey, but I started out small, with something that I consume a lot of but don’t know much about: alcohol. I graduated from college a few years ago, so until very recently I wouldn’t say no to most drinks. But just because a Lime-a-Rita tastes alright to me doesn’t mean that I don’t deserve a better option made with clean, responsibly-sourced ingredients.
Enter: Haus
I’d seen this aesthetically-pleasing brand called Haus all over Instagram for a while, and a few weeks ago decided to give it a try after seeing that they’ve been featured everywhere from Bon Appetit and GQ to The New York Times.
I couldn’t decide on just one flavor, so I sprung for Haus’ new Cocktail Kit, which features their four bestselling apéritifs in 200ML glass sampler bottles. I was excited to learn that Haus is female-founded, and even before I took my first sip, I knew I was going to love these drinks.
Trying It Out
OK, so the unboxing experience was just that – an experience. The bottles themselves are adorable (I re-use them for everything now), and even the packaging feels *very fancy* and sturdy enough to handle shipping four glass bottles all the way from Sonoma County, California to my apartment in New York City.
Haus uses zero artificial ingredients or refined sugars (goodbye hangovers!), and all of the fruits, herbs, and botanicals they use are sourced from top-notch local farmers to deliver the cleanest and most consistent flavor. You can absolutely tell.
The Cocktail Kit comes with four of Haus’ signature flavors: Spiced Cherry, New Fashioned, Ginger Yuzu and Grapefruit Jalapeño. As a margarita lover, I was excited to give Grapefruit Jalapeño a try, and let me tell you—I think I may be done with tequila-based margs for good. I poured it straight-up over ice with a squeeze of lime juice, and it was the perfect balance of sweet, complex, and a little bit spicy.
Why Haus Is My New Favorite Brand
What makes Haus unique (besides the fantastic ingredients and tasty, unique blends) is how they embrace apéritif culture. As a 20-something woman living in NYC, most get-togethers I go to consist of drinking whatever’s in front of me, and drinking it quickly. Haus is changing that narrative.
Apéritifs, made popular in Europe, are known for their low-ABV, complex flavor profiles, and supreme sippability. They’re meant to be enjoyed as a way to kick off leisure hour, bringing back a level of sophistication to drinking without suffering the consequences the next day.
I obviously loved the taste of Haus, but the story and the ethos behind the brand made it that much more special to me. These ready-to-drink apéritifs aren’t just delicious, they have actually changed the way that I drink. From now on, I’m saying no to “whatever” bevvies and drinking much more consciously. Haus is my new go-to for way too many reasons to count!
If you’re looking for a fresh, clean, and easy to drink cocktail, you need to try Haus’ low-ABV apéritifs… and if you’re indecisive like me, the Cocktail Kit is the way to go.
