About 70% of olive oil consumed by Americans is rotten. I didn’t know this until I replaced everything in my diet (dairy, gluten, soy, etc) to figure out what was causing my stomach to hurt. The only thing I hadn’t changed was my olive oil, which I use a couple of times a day. After doing some research, I learned that the olive oil industry is pretty shady (think: dirty production practices, improperly storing oils, using contaminated olives, etc.).
I made it my mission to find a clean, trustworthy olive oil brand. In the middle of my search, I came across an ad for a company called Brightland. Their olive oils are hand-crafted in California at a certified organic mill, harvested early by a master miller. Their oils never touch a lab, are made with only olives (nothing added), and have no preservatives. They’re produced in small batches, which is cleaner, fresher, and more sustainable than commercially produced oils.
Brightland is running a special where you can get two of their blends for 10% off, plus free shipping. I needed to give them a try, so I ordered their Duo bundle. The bundle includes their AWAKE and ALIVE blends.
When I unboxed the oils, their design blew me away. Generic, store-bought olive oil (which is what I’ve used forever) is usually stored in ugly, plastic bottles that actually rot your olive oil faster. Brightland’s oils come in UV-protected glass bottles, designed by artists, that protect the blends from light and heat damage.
The packaging is great, but I know you want to hear about the taste. The only time I’ve ever tasted such fresh, flavorful olive oil was when I was on an olive oil tasting tour in Italy. One of the most important things about your olive oil is the harvest date. Most generic, store-bought olive oils do not list their harvest date, which means there’s a great chance your oil isn’t fresh. Brightland makes sure that their harvest date is clearly printed on the bottle (mine were harvested in November 2019), so I can guarantee my olive oil is fresh.
Both blends have different tastes. The ALIVE blend has notes of nuts, green tomato, green pear and is smooth. The AWAKE blend is more herbaceous, green, grassy, and complex. I’ve been experimenting with both, in dressings, sauces, on sandwiches, and even drizzled over sorbet. Although I love them both, I have to say the ALIVE blend is my favorite. The nutty, fruity tastes add more flavor and fun to my dishes.
I’m so excited to bring these out at my next dinner party. Between the beautiful packaging, sustainable production, and clean, flavorful blends, I know Brightland is going to be a hit!
