Our day-to-day routines may vary, and sometimes the busier we get, the easier it is to compromise our well-being. Be it in taking time to unwind, spending quality time with family, or whipping up a home-cooked meal, the complexities that life throws our way can sometimes make us forget to take care of ourselves.
When you neglect to take care of yourself, your skin is the first to show it.
We all know that proper skin care is important but often, like most things, it’s easier said than done. Let TheGetWell give you eight reasons to take care of your skin because hey, you only have one! Don’t forget to take care of it!
Appearance
We can all be a little vain sometimes—it really isn’t something to feel bad about. Brand slogans that remind us that if we look good, we’ll also feel good are probably some of the most honest marketing campaigns out there. When was the last time you had dry and uneven skin and you felt good about it?
The only correct answer to that question is: never.
It’s not vanity if it’s for you and your well-being. It’s just, in its simplest form, proper hygiene. So the next time you feel bad about splurging on beauty products… DON’T! Take care of that skin, girl!
Skincare prevents blemishes and illnesses
We all took biology back in high school and, to jog your memory, we learned that the skin is the largest protective layer we have against bacteria and viruses. Simply washing your skin and cleaning it on a regular basis helps remove dirt and bacteria that might lead to skin blemishes, acne, or worse, viral infections.
What are the easiest ways to prevent blemishes and other types of illnesses, you ask? Simple. Never, ever, EVER touch your skin while or after being in public. The germs you acquire from touching train poles, bus handles, or even your own steering wheel can cause serious problems to your skin. The best way to protect yourself is to wash your hands the moment you step inside your house.
In this way, not only are you getting rid of the bacteria that your hands accumulated throughout your commute, but you’re also keeping your family safe from germs and viruses.
Prevention is cheaper than cure
Think of skincare as an investment to prevent you from spending more money later on because you didn’t take the necessary measures to keep your skin healthy. There are a number of conditions, like eczema, psoriasis, hives, acne, and keratosis that can result from improperly treated skin.
Healthline, a medical website dedicated to providing comprehensive information about illnesses, prevention, and treatment, has published an article about the many types of skin disorders.
Skincare routine = Discipline
Many would argue that developing a skincare routine has helped them improve their discipline and perseverance. Although skin results are fairly quick to see compared to having a toned body or increased stamina, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re easier to achieve.
Unfortunately, there’s not one skincare routine that applies to everyone. Much like science, everything is an experiment– achieving the right skincare routine depends on your willingness to research, hypothesize, and apply. You must also be willing to fail. Having the wrong skincare routine, one that does not suit your skin, or one that you’re allergic to means that you might have to go back to step one and do it all over again.
Scientifically, the cells found in our epidermis, the outermost layer of our skin, sheds every three to four weeks. Answers vary about how early the results of a new skincare routine would show. However, when you ask anyone who’s had a skincare routine for a year or longer, most will tell you that results will begin to show in as early as the fifth or sixth week after starting a new skincare regimen.
The real fight, however, is maintaining it and having enough discipline to keep going.
Reap what you sow… Now!
As mentioned above, developing a skincare routine actually produces fast results. According to lifestyle website Stylecaster, results vary with the type of skincare exercises that make up your skincare routine. For example, eye creams, known to combat those pesky circles under your eyes, show results as early as the sixth week of treatment while acne treatment results, depending on how well your product suits your skin, may show as early as the next day.
Skincare is a natural cure to aging
Okay, well maybe not a cure per se but it’s common knowledge that the right skin care regimen will help slow down aging. And wouldn’t we all want that?
What is it in our skin that makes us look old? Is it the wrinkles? The dullness? The dryness? If you’re getting senior discounts at 40 then maybe it’s time to rethink things and develop a skincare routine that will make you look your age. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services says there are a number of preventative measures that you can take in order to keep your skin looking healthy.
To combat aging, you must:
- Limit your time in the sun
- Use the right sunscreen
- Wear protective clothing
- Avoid artificial tanning
If there’s one constant in life, it’s time. As time keeps ticking, so will we. There really is nothing definitive that we can do to stop aging, but delaying it seems to be the next best thing. Take proper care of your skin and have the discipline to keep going. We only live once! Why not have amazing skin in this lifetime?
